Polar Plunge Raises Funds For Special Olympics
The 3rd annual Polar Plunge will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Cedar City Aquatic Center. This year we are really trying to educate the community on the reason for the plunge. This event is a fundraiser for Special Olympics and we want people to be aware that their money is supporting a very worthy cause.
Bethany is an example of an athlete who has benefited from the Special Olympics Summer Games which was held last year in Cedar City. Please watch this link to see an example of what your money supports.
The money that is raised helps Special Olympic athletes train and participate in athletic events around the state and even the world. The Special Olympics Summer Games was held in Cedar City last year for the first time. They had such a great experience here that they are hoping to make it a tradition.
This year plungers will be jumping into the frigid water in the Aquatic Center Outdoor Pool and then be able to enjoy the warm water of the hot tub and Leisure Pool after they jump. Family and friends of the plungers will be able to swim that day with a 10% discount on each pass. The donation amount is set by Special Olympics and is a minimum amount of $50 per plunger and $25 for student plungers. For this donation the plunger will receive a t-shirt and and goodie bag. The first 150 to register will receive a full-size towel. There are added incentives for raising more money (see the Polar Plunge Kit available on the website for more details).
There will be a costume judging contest at 11:30 a.m. in the Aquatic Center lobby and prizes will be awarded to four different age groups. You can register individually or as a team. Go to http://www.sout.org/polar-plunge to register. You can also visit the City website at www.cedarcity.org or call 865-9223 for more information. Again, the costume contest is at 11:30 a.m. and the plunge starts at noon.
